Hydrogen in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté: A Regional Powerhouse for the Energy Transition
Bourgogne-Franche-Comté is rapidly positioning itself as France’s reference territory for hydrogen. With a regional roadmap targeting carbon neutrality by 2050, over 100 companies already active in the sector, and 1,000 jobs expected by 2030, the region offers a uniquely complete ecosystem — from R&D and manufacturing to deployment and training.
A Strategic Logistics & Industrial Base
The region’s geography makes it a natural European crossroads: 14 TGV stations, 6 airports, and 9 motorways connect it to key markets across the continent. Its industrial fabric is equally impressive — 420,000 companies, including 21,400 industrial sites, and a workforce of 1.3 million. With a GDP of €87.5 billion and €21.3 billion in exports, it ranks as France’s 2nd largest exporting region. Its deep expertise in metal and materials processing provides a natural foundation for the hydrogen systems of tomorrow.
A Complete Hydrogen Ecosystem
The region hosts world-class research institutions — FEMTO-ST, FC Lab, and the ICB laboratory — working alongside leading engineering schools such as UTBM and the Universities of Bourgogne and Strasbourg. Dedicated hydrogen test benches (fuel cells, electrolysers) are already operational. Competitiveness clusters including Véhicule du Futur, Vallée de l’Énergie, and Polymeris help coordinate the industrial network and drive local innovation. Specialisedtraining programmes — including an H2 Master’s degree and a CMI Hydrogen-Energy track — are building the next generation of hydrogen professionals.
Flagship Projects & Key Players
Several landmark projects are already underway. John Cockerill (formerly McPhy) is establishing an electrolyser gigafactory in Belfort, while Inocel (Inéo Group) is building France’s first PEM fuel cell factory on the same territory. Start-up Gen-Hy is developing AEM electrolysers in Montbéliard, creating 120 jobs by 2025. Territorial demonstrators are also live: the Bel’Hynov multimodal station (Grand Belfort) supplies hydrogen-powered buses, the Belfort E-START project (3.3 MWp solar) combines renewable energy with hydrogen production, and the AuxHYgen network near Auxerre is rolling out H₂ infrastructure for buses and regional trains.
Strong Public Support & Investment Opportunities
Both the French State and the Regional Council are actively funding R&D, infrastructure, and hydrogen train acquisition. Under the France 2030 plan, Inocel has been labelled France’s first H₂ PEM fuel cell factory, and the regional “École de l’Hydrogène” secured national funding to train the next wave of hydrogen engineers.
Whether you are an industrial company, energy player, equipment supplier, solution developer, or investment fund, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté offers structured support, available industrial sites, and a tailored public accompaniment to accelerate your project.
